Kira and Kateryna

Kira, who is 3-years-old, and Kateryna, who is 10, are the daughters of a happy family originally from Nova Kakhovka in the Kherson region. Kira and Kateryna’s parents were supportive of their daughters, always celebrating their little successes. They dreamed of taking a family vacation together one day and of having a cozy home to raise their two young girls.

Since 2014, Kira and Kateryna’s father has been performing military service in Donetsk. His call sign is “Unbreakable Cyborg,” a sign of his strength and prowess on the battlefield. Unfortunately, this prowess came to an end when the Russian occupiers took control of the region during the full-scale invasion.

It was dangerous to remain in occupied Donetsk, so Kira and Kateryna’s mother fled with her children across the border to seek safety, requiring them to cross several Russian checkpoints and the annexed territory of Crimea. Now, the family currently resides far away from home, having settled in Germany. Kateryna is currently attending school and learning German while Kira is preparing for kindergarten.

Kira, Kateryna and their mother eagerly look forward to the day when their cherished dream of returning home to their native Ukraine will come true.
