Vika

Since the beginning of the conflict 8 years ago, Vika’s family has lived in anticipation of a better future in Ukraine. In 2014, her father began to fight for the country and in May of 2022 he received redeployment orders to Bakhmut in the Donbas region, where the fiercest battles are presently taking place. Shortly after the redeployment, Vika’s father stopped contacting the family and her mother received word that her husband had disappeared. The family searched for him, though their efforts were unsuccessful. Several weeks later, they received confirmation that her father had come into contact with an enemy mine and perished.

Six-year-old Vika remains with her mother and the two of them must now get accustomed to difficult changes in their lives, without their beloved father and husband by their side.

Arsen and Oksana

Oksana and Arsen Korolchuk lost their breadwinner father, Volodymyr, in the war, while their mother, Svitlana, is seriously ill. The family is forced to live in an unfinished house.

Svitlana worked all her life with her husband to build their own home. Their dream came true when they bought a house in Volyn and moved there with their children. With their father’s skilled hands, he managed to renovate the living room and the bathroom. But when the russian war broke out, Volodymyr was among those who died as a hero, leaving behind an unfinished home.

Now, Svitlana is raising Oksana and Arsen on her own. Due to serious health problems and lack of money, she cannot afford to continue with the house renovations. After her first operation, she miraculously started walking, and recently underwent another operation. Currently, the Korolchuk family lives in an unfinished house, where they struggle to cook in the bathroom and sleep in the same living room.
