A taste of Mexico in our kitchen: cooking together with color and flavor
On 16 August, participants in Oleina for Children. Cooking with Love explored Mexican cuisine. The children prepared pico de gallo, burritos and churros, worked with vegetables, fruit and spices, and discovered new flavour combinations together.
On 16 August, the Yevhen Chernukha Culinary School was filled with the colours, spices and aromas of Mexican cuisine. At another gathering of the “Oleina for Children. Cooking with Love” project, the children explored a cuisine known for fresh vegetables, unexpected combinations and bold flavours.
The masterclass menu featured:
- pico de gallo with mango salsa;
- burritos with chilli con carne, vegetable salsa and guacamole;
- churros with chocolate glaze;
- melon and banana drink.
Mexican cuisine offers plenty of opportunities to discover just how differently familiar ingredients can be used. During the masterclass, the children worked with vegetables, fruit and spices, prepared salsas and sauces, combined ingredients and assembled the finished dishes together.
At these gatherings, what matters is not only the final result that everyone can see and taste. The process itself is just as valuable: cooking side by side, sharing tasks, helping one another, meeting new people and simply enjoying time together.
Cooking masterclasses for children under the care of the Children of Heroes Charity Fund are made possible by the ongoing support of Oleina. Now in its third year, the “Oleina for Children. Cooking with Love” project provides a space where learning new skills, creating together and connecting with others come naturally around the same table.
