‘Paw of Support’: A Unique Reading Project with Dogs Launched in Kyiv

On February 4, the first session of the “Paw of Support” initiative took place at the book.ua bookstore café—a unique project that combines reading and dog therapy for displaced children. The event was organized by book.ua in collaboration with our Charity Fund, the InNikos Club canine center, and Purina.
The goal of the project is to create a safe and comfortable space for children who have experienced loss and forced displacement. The children had the opportunity to choose a book and read it to specially trained dogs, who listened attentively, fostering a unique and supportive atmosphere. Under the guidance of canine specialists and event moderators, the children interacted with the dogs, engaged in conversation, and discovered a new way to connect with literature.
“We understand how important it is to create moments of joy and a sense of peace for the children supported by our Fund. This unique reading format helps them overcome their fear of making mistakes and develop self-confidence. It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to feel warmth and support,” said Hanna Khomenko, Head of the Department for Work with Affected Families and Co-founder of the Children of Heroes Charity Fund.
Reading in the company of dogs is not just a form of therapy but also an opportunity for children to make new friends, broaden their horizons, and feel safe in a new environment. The InNikos Club canine center specializes in providing psychological support for children and adults through creativity, education, and innovative therapeutic approaches.
“Canis therapy has long proven its effectiveness in working with children who have experienced stress. Our dogs are trained to listen, be patient, and support children in their most sensitive moments. We are delighted to be part of this project and to help children through interactions with animals,” said Marina Prokopenko, owner and head of the InNikos canine club and canis therapy center.
The sessions will take place every Tuesday at the book.ua bookstore near Zoloti Vorota (2/1 Mykola Lysenka Street). Admission is free.
We invite all children supported by our Foundation who want to make new friends, improve their reading skills, and simply enjoy the warmth and comfort of being around dogs.
Together, we can make the world a kinder place.
